Stirling University was host to the Forth Valley Disability Sport Regional School Swimming Championships last Thursday. Fifteen schools from throughout the Forth Valley Area entered teams to compete in 25m, 50m and 100m events in Freestyle, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Backstroke and Relay Races. Sixty four primary and secondary school boys and girls competed in the event to a very high standard. Many of whom achieved the qualifying times for the Scottish Disability Sport National Swimming Championships that take place in November of this year. The competition was very close and there was very little time between placing in many of the events, which made for a great atmosphere and lots of cheering from the spectators. Lynne Glen SportCentral Disability Sport Development Manager said, “ It was great to see so many swimmers taking part in the event and enjoying the competitive experience.” Andrew Lindsay, Paralympic World Record Holder, presented winners with medals. Andrew swam in the last three Paralympics in Atlanta, Sydney and Athens and has won 2 Gold and 1 Silver Medal for 100m and 200m backstroke events. Andrew also delighted the spectators with a 100m backstroke demonstration after presenting the medals, leaving the competitors with a vision to aspire to.
Paul Wilson, Scottish Swimming Disability Swim Development Officer presented certificates to all swimmers congratulated all swimmers who took part in an exciting day’s competition and commented on the event by saying, “We witnessed some excellent individual swims as well as a number of thrilling races where medals were decided by a fingertip. I look forward to more of the same from Forth Valley swimmers at the SDS Nationals, and future regional events. Well done to everyone!"
